In October 1837, the Voortrekker leader Piet Retief visited Dingane at his royal kraal, to negotiate a land deal for the voortrekkers. One exception to these purges was Mpande, another half-brother, who was considered too weak to be a threat at the time.Ĭlashes with the Voortrekkers and the ascendancy of Mpande In the years that followed, he also executed many past supporters of Shaka in order to secure his position. One of his first royal acts was to execute several more of his royal kin. Following this assassination, Dingane murdered Mhlangana, and took over the throne. Shaka was succeeded by Dingane, his half brother, who conspired with Mhlangana, another half-brother, to murder him. When Senzangakona died, Dingiswayo helped Shaka claim his place as chief of the Zulu Kingdom. Shaka fought as a warrior under Dingiswayo, chief of the Mthethwa. He and his mother, Nandi, were exiled by Senzangakona, and found refuge in the Mthethwa. Shaka Zulu was the illegitimate son of Senzangakona, chief of the Zulus. There were more than one dominatrix, several animals of unknown origin, the Flintstones and many interpretations of the theme that were hard to identify. To the credit of everyone involved, people let their imaginations ‘run wild’.

What else did I like about the convention? Until attending the dinner on the Saturday night, I’d felt a little confused about how to define Call of the Wild. Many speakers brought tears of both sorrow and joy to the eyes of the audience with their amazing speeches. I imagine it was hair’s breadth between several of the contestants. All I can say is-’wow!’ Many people agreed that the overall standard was very high indeed. I’ve been to a number of conventions and the singing really took this event to a whole new level.

The guys comprising Adelaide’s DQ Barbershop Quartet were highly professional and very switched-on. My singing had rarely moved beyond the shower, but I found singing in a group to be incredibly liberating. I’ve always felt shy about singing in public. Not only did it have workshops, contests, appearances by our international president Jim Kokocki and the incredibly exciting council meeting, but it also featured a barbershop quartet who taught us that you could have no musical talent at all and still sound good!

If you found yourself humming the 1952 hit The Lion Sleeps Tonight over the last few days, there’s a good chance you attended the District 73 Annual Toastmasters Convention in Adelaide.
